 Instructions

**The applications will need to be emailed to **

**These three items MUST be included in the reply email to receive a voucher:**

1. Fully filled-out voucher application
2. Photocopy of your ID (and proof of residence, if needed)
3. Photocopy of your method of qualifying
 
**Directions:**

- Fill out the attached voucher and save it. Reply to this email and attach the filled-out application.
- Make a photocopy of your photo ID and attach it to the reply email. (Must be readable)
    If your address is not correct on your ID, also send a readable photocopy of something that is addressed to you at your current address. (mail, lease agreement, etc.)
- See page 2 of the application to determine how you qualify.Include a photocopy of the method you qualify with. (Lonestar, Proof of Income, top sheet of last year’s tax return, etc.)

## TNR Voucher Application
 Instructions

**The applications will need to be emailed to **

1. Fill out all applicable areas.
     In the animal section, fill in as much information as you know. We mainly need to know color and breed (long hair or short hair).
     It’s ok if you don’t know the sex or have a name for the animal.
     You will also need to read and sign the second page.
2. When you return the filled-out form, also attach a readable photocopy of your photo ID.
     If your address is not correct on your photo ID, please also attach a readable photocopy of something that is addressed to you at your current address. (mail, lease contract, etc.)
 
**PLEASE NOTE:** All attachments need to be either JPG or PDF only.

Once the application and all other needed attachments are received, we will generate your voucher(s) and email them to you or the vet you specify.

You will need to call the vet office and set up appointments for you to bring in your trapped feral(s).

**Note: The feral cats must be brought into the vet clinic in live traps, no kennels.**

![Humane-Society-of-Nac-headr-logo](https://humanesocietynac.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/Humane-Society-of-Nac-headr-logo-150x150.png)The Humane Society of Nacogdoches county is a nonprofit organization founded in 1959 by Roger and Charlotte Montgomery, along with Winifred Hall, with a commitment to educate our community in the humane care and treatment of animals as well as to prevent animal cruelty and unnecessary euthanasia. Charlotte Montgomery participated in the worldwide movement for the humane treatment of animals and received many awards, including the Krutch Medal of the Humane Society of the United States in 1983. For 36 years, she was active in promoting humane education through her newspaper column “Noah’s Notebook” in the Daily Sentinel.

She endowed a professorship of humane and environmental education at SFASU. She was inducted into the Nacogdoches Women’s Hall of Fame in 1996. She was a member of the Texas Institute of Letters, the Texas Ornithological Society and various environmental and animal rights organizations. Charlotte’s compassion for animals is carried on through her donations to the City of Nacogdoches, the Texas Land Conservatory, and SFA. In 1983, Charlotte donated 16 acres to the city, which eventually became the Banita Creek Nature Preserve. In 1984, she established The Roger Montgomery Humane Education Fund, in memory of her husband, at SFA. In 1993, Charlotte donated 15 acres of land to the Texas Land Conservatory.

## WHY should you Spay or Neuter your pet?

Many people are surprised to learn that nationwide, more than 2.7 million healthy, adoptable cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters annually. Spay/neuter is the only permanent, 100 percent effective method of birth control for dogs and cats.

## What does it mean to “Spay and Neuter” your pet?

Spaying and neutering are both procedures used to sterilize animals like dogs and cats, but spaying refers to the procedure done to female animals while neutering is the corresponding process for males. Spaying involves taking out the uterus and ovaries while males are neutered by removing the testicles.

## BENEFITS of Spaying or Neutering

Your female pet will live a longer, healthier life. Spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast cancer, which is fatal in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. Spaying your pet before her first heat offers the best protection from these diseases.

Your spayed female won’t go into heat.While cycles can vary, female felines usually go into heat four to five days every three weeks during breeding season. In an effort to advertise for mates, they’ll yowl and urinate more frequently—sometimes all over the house!

Neutering provides major health benefits for your male.
 Besides preventing unwanted litters, neutering your male companion prevents testicular cancer if done before six months of age.

Your male dog won’t want to roam away from home.

### Pets are homeless everywhere

In the U.S., there are an estimated 6-8 million homeless animals entering animal shelters every year. Barely half of these animals are adopted. Tragically, the rest are euthanized. These are healthy, sweet pets who would have made great companions.

The [number of homeless animals](http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/pet_overpopulation/facts/overpopulation_estimates.html?credit=web_id83581228) varies by state—in some states there are as many as 300,000 homeless animals euthanized in animal shelters every year. These are not the offspring of homeless “street” animals—these are the puppies and kittens of cherished family pets and even purebreds.

### Your pet’s health

A [USA Today](http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/05/07/pet-longevity-states-spay-neuter/2130813/) (May 7, 2013) article cites that pets who live in the states with the highest rates of spaying/neutering also live the longest. According to the report, neutered male dogs live 18% longer than un-neutered male dogs and spayed female dogs live 23% longer than unspayed female dogs. The report goes on to add that in Mississippi, the lowest-ranking state for pet longevity, 44% of the dogs are not neutered or spayed.

Part of the reduced lifespan of unaltered pets can be attributed to their increased urge to roam, exposing them to fights with other animals, getting struck by cars, and other mishaps.

Another contributor to the increased longevity of altered pets involves the reduced risk of certain types of cancers. Unspayed female cats and dogs have a far greater chance of developing pyrometra (a fatal uterine infection), uterine cancer, and other cancers of the reproductive system.

Medical evidence indicates that females spayed before their first heat are typically healthier. (Many veterinarians now sterilize dogs and cats as young as eight weeks of age.)

Male pets who are neutered eliminate their chances of getting testicular cancer, and it is thought they they have lowered rates of prostate cancer, as well.

### Curbing bad behavior

Unneutered dogs are much more assertive and prone to [urine-marking](http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/dogs/tips/urine_marking.html?credit=web_id83581228) (lifting his leg) than neutered dogs. Although it is most often associated with male dogs, females may do it, too. Spaying or neutering your dog should reduce urine-marking and may stop it altogether.

For cats, the [urge to spray](http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/cats/tips/marking_territory.html?credit=web_id83581228) is extremely strong in an intact cat, and the simplest solution is to[get yours neutered or spayed](http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/pet_overpopulation/tips/where_to_spay_neuter.html?credit=web_id83581228) by [4 months of age](http://www.whentospay.org/) before there’s even a problem. Neutering solves 90 percent of all marking issues, even in cats that have been doing it for a while. It can also minimize howling, the urge to roam, and fighitng with other males.

In both cats and dogs, the longer you wait, the greater the risk you run of the surgery not doing the trick because the behavior is so ingrained.

Other behavioral problems that can be ameliorated by spay/neuter include:

- [Aggression](http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/dogs/tips/aggression.html?credit=web_id83581228): Studies also show that most dogs bites involve dogs who are unaltered.
- Excessive [barking](http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/dogs/tips/barking_causes.html?credit=web_id83581228), mounting, and other [dominance-related behaviors](http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/dogs/tips/dominant_dogs.html?credit=web_id83581228).
 
While getting your pets spayed/neutered can help curb undesirable behaviors, it will not change their fundamental personality, like their protective instinct.

### Cost cutting

When you factor in the long-term costs potentially incurred by a non-altered pet, the savings afforded by spay/neuter are clear (especially given the plethora of [low-cost spay/neuter clincs](http://www.humanesociety.org/issues/pet_overpopulation/tips/afford_spay_neuter.html?credit=web_id83581228)).

Caring for a pet with reproductive system cancer or pyometra can easily run into the thousands of dollars—five to ten times as much as a routine spay surgery. Additionally, unaltered pets can be more destructive or high-strung around other dogs. Serious fighting is more common between unaltered pets of the same gender and can incur high veterinary costs.

Renewing your pet’s license can be more expensive, too. Many counties have spay/neuter laws that require pets to be sterilized, or require people with unaltered pets to pay higher license renewal fees.

### Spaying and neutering are good for rabbits, too

Part of being conscientious about the pet overpopulation problem is to spay or neuter your pet rabbits, too. Rabbits reproduce faster than dogs or cats and often end up in shelters, where they must be euthanized. Neutering male rabbits can reduce hormone-driven behavior such as lunging, mounting, spraying, and boxing.

And just as with dogs and cats, spayed female rabbits are less likely to get ovarian, mammary, and uterine cancers, which can be prevalent in mature females.

## The state of Texas has a set of laws called the Texas Animal Cruelty Laws that prohibits the cruel treatment of animals, defined as:

- Torturing an animal
- Failing to provide food, care or shelter
- Abandoning an animal
- Transporting or confining an animal in a cruel manner
- Killing, seriously injuring or poisoning an animal
- Causing an animal to fight with another
- Using a live animal as a lure in a dog race
- Tripping a horse
- Injuring an animal belonging to another person
- Seriously overworking an animal

## In the city of Nacogdoches:

- Pets must be vaccinated for rabies at 4 months.
- Pets must be on a leash in all public places.
- Pets must have valid city identification tags
- Pets under 4 months cannot enter the dog park.

Young people have a natural affinity for animals; we help to instill that through ethics and empathy at every stage of a child’s development. ## TNR Program

## Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) is a method of humanely and effectively managing free-roaming domestic feral cats.

This process involves using a live-trap to capture the cat, having them spayed/neutered, ear-tipped for identification purposes and vaccinated against rabies. Then they are released back into their territory and colony to live out their natural lives without adding to the burgeoning unwanted pet population.

## How To Adopt

- According to the Humane Society of Nacogdoches, their adoption fee for an unspayed or unneutered dog or cat is $20.00 plus the cost of rabies vaccination and spaying or neutering your new companion.
- Animals who are already spayed or neutered have a $30 adoption fee.
- Animals who were previously fixed are $50.
- Animals older than 6 months who have not been altered can be done thru our low cost spay/neuter clinic or the vet of your choice.
- All money must be paid up front; if you choose to spay/neuter your animal yourself the vet must be in the Nacogdoches area.
- All animals are already vaccinated
- The adoption fee includes a microchip in the pet
- Fostering program
- WE ALSO PAY FOR ADOPTION FEES FOR THOSE WHO QUALIFY!
